In simple terms, a parenting plan is a voluntary written agreement between a child’s parents stating their intentions and rules for sharing the care and support of the child.

In my opinion creating a Parenting Plan is one of the best steps you can take to create a healthy separation. You can save yourself a lot of emotional turmoil by creating a detailed plan with your ex-partner in the early days of your separation. The reality of the situation is that you may struggle to meet face to face with your ex and spend the time to create the ground rules, after all there’s a good chance you are reading this as your marriage didn’t end well. Can you put your differences and hurt aside to do this?

So on a practical level – what’s in a Parenting Plan?

The plan is the dos and don’ts, the rules, the timings, the what if situations. The who to call if …, what to do when … etc. It is the informal agreements and set of rules that should hopefully make everyone’s life easier.
